Behind every successful kitchen are warm, level tiles

The underfloor heating for the kitchen went in late May.
But first... some floor leveling had to be done....
The joists have warped, as they do over a period of years...
The square sheet in the middle is filler.
Now for the heating wire.

Kitchen gut

I neglected my blog. Here's what happened back in May. Pictures of the (almost) finished product coming soon!

Funny stuff

Things that happened way back in 1998....

I guess the original cabinet guy was a bit of a slacker. Or at least one of the contractors was having a bad day. "Kitchen vent not cut out...kind of hard to vent that way".

How to waste 16 square feet in your kitchen.

Always drill twice as many holes as you need. You can never have enough drainage.

Kitchen destruction

The Kitchen (before destruction)

These photos illustrate why the kitchen was a "gut" job and nothing in between.

If you're still not convinced, remind me *not* to come to dinner at your place!

The Plan...

So here we are in mid May.  I have been living in my new home for 6 weeks now.  Going well so far...

The order of work is as follows:

1) Replace kitchen, upgrades
2) Main bathroom / Ensuite addition
3) Replace doors and closet bifolds
4) Replace baseboards
5) Repaint rooms
6) Carpet bedrooms
7) Replace flooring on main floor
8) Insulate garage
9) Basement

As I write, task 1, which is by far the most complex task of the project is under way.  Photos to follow soon.

The goal is to be at task 8 by November before our long Canadian winter kicks in, and my car can be treated to a heated garage (both at home and at work - such luxury!) all winter long.  In terms of budget, I don't have an absolute maximum as the job will be done over a course of months (one of the luxuries of doing the job myself) however i am hoping to keep the spend to about $25k.  Note that this doesn't include any yard work - which in itself needs a good makeover.
